Add Backup Proxy
In my previous article we looked at what’s new in Veeam Backup for Office 365 v8. We will now look at configuring a proxy backup under Linux. We can then add a second repository and then the backup job. It is important to consider the following points :
- It’s possible to use physical or virtual server. All server must be reachable to each other by their DNS name
- Operating system can be Microsoft or Linux
- The server can be joined to the domain or configured on Workgroup
- The information of the restore points (for each backup proxy), is saved to the configuration database.
- For the server on Workgroup, the server use SSL certificate.
Add Veeam Backup Proxy
From the Veeam console, open Backup Infrastructure, then click on Backup Proxies. Click on Add Proxy.
Check Linux and click on Next.
Type the DNS name of the repository server. My Linux server is not join at the Active Directory domain, so i need create a new DNS records for resolve the DNS name. Description is not mandatory. Enter description if you want and click on Next.
Enter credential to connect on SSH at the server. The account used don’t have any admin permission then click on Advanced. Check Elevate specified account to root and click on OK. Private key is not required so we can click on Next.
A warning appear to ask if you trust this server. Click on Yes
Service account must be selected. Three option is possible. veeam365backup account this option permit to use the default service account created by Veeam Backup for M365. Option Use the following account can be used a specified account. Finally the option Create the following user account locally and assign the required permissions permit to create a new account. Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 will use this account. I choose the option to create new user account and to assign required permissions.
Configuration is in progress. If all step are validated, click on Finish.
Proxy error during configuration
If you have this error during the configuration, perform the following configuration.

From the linux server, open a terminal and run the command sudo nano /etc/hosts.
Enter the IP address of the VBO server and the netbios name of this server. Use the Ctrl and X keys to save the file. Run the command systemctl reboot to restart the server. Retry to apply the configuration on VBO Server.
The proxy is been installed. I have a warning because my VM doesn’t respect the minimum requirements.
Create a Backup Proxy Pool
Before to create a Backup Proxy Pool, a second backup proxy must be configured. Perform the same action as the previous section. From the Veeam console, open Backup Infrastructure tab then click on Backup Proxy Tools. On the ribbon, click on Add Proxy Pool.
Enter the name of the pool then click on Next.
Add the two linux Backup Proxy servers previously added on the veeam console. Click on Add and select the desired servers. Click on Finish.
Add Object Repositories
From the veeam console, open Backup Infrastructure tab and select Backup Repositories. Click on Add Repository on the ribbon.
Enter the name of the repository, then click on Next. On the target location, select Backup to object storage then click on Next.
Check Wasabi Cloud Storage then click on Next. Select the region and the account for connect to the Wasabi storage. Click on Next.
select the bucket and the folder. It’s possible to limit the object storage consumption.
Select the Backup Proxy Pool with Select button then click on Next. Configure the retention policy then click on Next. It’s possible to enable the backups immutable and the encryption. Click on Finish.
The repository is now been configured.
Configure Backup Job
From the Veeam console, open Organizations then select the organization. On the ribbon, click on Backup.
Enter the name of the job and click on Next. You can enter description if you want
Select the users needed, with the Edit button, it’s possible to select the platform that you want backup. Click on Next.
Configure the scheduling windows and click on Create.
